25.09.2012 Polygraphy and Printing as Field for Using Metallized Boards

For the first time in history, the cover page of the Tara I Upakovka magazine of issue 4-12 has been made from metallized board.

The tour of the Tarai Upakovka editors to the Galileo Coating Technologies (GCT) factory not only resulted in a publication about the event, but also prompted a practical idea to make the magazine’s cover from GCT’s metallized board. The material showed its best during printing and post-printing, according to the printing house which published the magazine’s issue. The material creased well in all directions.

For the cover, we used the GC2 board (single-coated board of primary fibers) made in Finland with a substance of 245 gsm. The board was vacuum metallized – a layer of coating was applied to the baseboard, and then a layer of aluminum was applied in a vacuum chamber that was once again covered by a coating. The finished material weighed 248 gsm. The board was metallized in a roll, the ready material was cut into A2 size pieces upon the publishing houses’ request.

A comment from UV-Print technologist who printed the cover:

“We did the printing in three stages. We first sealed the reverse side, and then applied white ink on the face (metallized) side and then performed the full-color printing (CMYK) applying the UV coating in a line. The material acted as a high quality one during all the stages – 100% ink adhesion and great finished result. It was the first time we were working with vacuum metallized boards (before that we mainly worked with laminates) and are very pleased with the results.”

A successful cooperation between GCT and one of the industry’s leading media showed that using metallized boards as covers opens new designer horizons for printing and publishing houses and complies with the premium and high gloss requirements even without film lamination while at the same time being environmentally-friendly.
